Keep Your Eyes on Jesus

perseverance The Way of the Cross: 30 Days in Scripture CrossShaped editorial team

Scripture

Therefore, since we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, putting aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us, let us run with patient endurance the race that has been set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the originator and perfecter of faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider the one who endured such hostility by sinners against himself, so that you will not grow weary in your souls and give up.

Hebrews 12:1–3

Reflection

Hebrews pictures faith as a race run in the company of others. The image includes endurance, but it does not ask us to carry unnecessary weight or to compete for first place. We are invited to lay aside what hinders us and to keep our attention on Jesus, whose path passes through suffering and shame toward life with God. Perseverance is not the same as pushing through every situation at any cost. There are burdens we should name, share, or put down. Abuse, illness, and exhaustion are not tests that prove our spiritual worth. Sometimes the faithful next step is to seek safety, take a needed rest, or ask for help. The passage encourages us to continue in hope, not to deny our limits. We do not run alone. The examples of faith that surround us can remind us that others have endured difficult seasons, and our own steady choices may encourage someone else. Jesus remains our focus not because we can imitate every aspect of his suffering, but because his trust and love reveal where the path leads. Today, faithfulness may look like one honest prayer or one more step toward healing. Small steps count when they are taken toward life.

Prayer

Jesus, help us release what keeps us from the path of life and receive support for what feels heavy. Give us endurance shaped by hope, wisdom, and love.
