Christ in the Storm

fear The Way of the Cross: 30 Days in Scripture CrossShaped editorial team

Scripture

And on that day, when it was evening, he said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him along, as he was, in the boat. And other boats were with him. And a great storm of wind developed, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already being filled with water . And he was in the stern sleeping on the cushion, and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, is it not a concern to you that we are perishing?” And he woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Be quiet! Be silent!” And the wind abated and there was a great calm. And he said to them, “Why are you fearful? Do you not yet have faith?” And they were terribly frightened and began to say to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Mark 4:35–41

Reflection

The disciples are caught in a storm while crossing the lake with Jesus. Their fear is understandable: the danger is real, and the boat is filling with water. When they wake Jesus, he responds to the storm and then asks about their fear. The story does not mock them for being afraid. It places their fear beside the startling presence of Jesus, whose authority reaches even the forces they cannot control. We also encounter storms that do not quickly settle. A diagnosis, a relationship in crisis, or events beyond our control can make us wonder whether anyone sees what is happening. This passage is not a promise that every crisis will end as we wish. It is an invitation to bring our fear to Jesus rather than keeping it hidden, and to remember that his presence is not limited to calm circumstances. Sometimes the help we need arrives through a friend, a professional, or a community that helps us navigate danger. Asking for that help is not a failure of faith. We can pray honestly, take prudent action, and allow others to steady the boat with us. In the storm, the question is not whether we feel afraid, but whether fear must leave us alone.

Prayer

Jesus, meet us in the storms we cannot control. Give us courage to ask for help, wisdom for the next step, and trust in your presence when the waves remain.

Today's Question

Where could you ask for support rather than face a difficult situation alone?
