Led, Not Rushed
Scripture
Yahweh is my shepherd; I will not lack for anything . In grassy pastures he makes me lie down; by quiet waters he leads me. He restores my life. He leads me in correct paths for the sake of his name. Even when I walk in a dark valley, I fear no evil because you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare before me a table in the presence of my oppressors. You anoint my head with oil; my cup is overflowing. Surely goodness and loyal love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will stay in the house of Yahweh for a very long time.
Psalm 23:1–6
Reflection
Psalm 23 does not promise a life without dark valleys. It imagines a shepherd who stays present through them, providing rest, guidance, and companionship. The image is not of a hurried God driving the flock toward a finish line, but of one who knows what the sheep need and leads them with care. Many of us live as if our worth depends on how quickly we can keep moving. Rest can feel undeserved, especially when responsibilities remain unfinished. The psalm reminds us that receiving care is part of faithful life. Pausing is not the same as giving up; it can be a way of trusting that we are not the only ones holding everything together. Jesus takes up the image of the good shepherd and gives himself for the sheep. His care does not deny danger or grief; it meets us within them. We can bring our real circumstances to God rather than pretending the valley is easy. We can also become signs of that care for another person by offering patient presence instead of rushed answers. The path may still be difficult, but we are not asked to walk it alone.
Prayer
Good Shepherd, lead us at a pace that makes room for your care. Stay near in the valleys, restore what is weary, and teach us to offer steady companionship to others.
