The Courage to Begin

Scripture

And Yahweh said to Abram, “Go out from your land and from your relatives, and from the house of your father, to the land that I will show you. And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great. And you will be a blessing. And I will bless those who bless you, and those who curse you I will curse. And all families of the earth will be blessed in you.”

Genesis 12:1–3

Reflection

Abram's story opens with a call to leave what is familiar and move toward a future he cannot yet see. The promise is not simply that Abram will be blessed; through him, blessing will reach the families of the earth. His journey therefore begins with both trust and a purpose larger than himself. Most of us do not receive a map for every decision. We face smaller invitations: to make peace, ask for help, tell the truth, or take the next faithful step while the outcome remains uncertain. Genesis does not portray trust as having no questions. It portrays a life that responds to God's promise by moving forward. The wider biblical story follows this pattern, culminating in Jesus, whose self-giving opens blessing beyond every boundary we draw. An uncertain beginning can feel like a loss of control. Faith does not require pretending otherwise. It asks us to bring our uncertainty into God's presence and consider what love requires next. We may not know where one step will lead, but we can ask whether it carries generosity, courage, and care for others. A beginning becomes faithful not because it guarantees success, but because we entrust it to the God who calls and blesses.

Prayer

Faithful God, meet us where the next step is unclear. Give us courage to trust your promise and generosity to seek blessing for others, not only ourselves.
