The Fruit of the Spirit

character Foundations CrossShaped Editorial

Scripture

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self control. Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23

Reflection

Paul lists the character the Spirit grows in us: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control." It reads like a portrait of a beautiful life — the kind of person we would all love to be, and love to be around. But notice the single word that governs the whole list: "fruit." Not "works." Not "achievements." Fruit. Fruit grows. It is not manufactured by gritted teeth or willpower alone; it emerges, over time, from a healthy plant rooted in good soil. This echoes what Jesus said about the vine and the branches. The Spirit produces this character in those who remain connected to Christ. We do not generate love and patience by sheer effort; we bear them as the natural outflow of a life the Spirit is tending. That is both humbling and hopeful. Humbling, because it means we cannot take credit for genuine goodness, nor can we fake it into existence. Hopeful, because it means growth in character is not finally dependent on our own frail strength. The Gardener is at work. The fruit will come. It is also worth noticing that the fruit is singular — "the fruit of the Spirit is," not "are." These qualities form one integrated character, the character of Christ himself, being reproduced in us. Where one grows, the others follow, like a single cluster ripening together. So be patient with your own growth. Stay rooted in Christ, keep in step with the Spirit, and trust that the fruit is being formed — quietly, steadily, in its season.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, I cannot manufacture love, joy, and peace by my own effort. Grow your fruit in me as I stay rooted in Christ. Make me patient with the slow work of your gardening, and form the character of Jesus in me.

Today's Question

Which fruit of the Spirit do you most long to see grow in you, and how might you stay "rooted" so it can?
