No Condemnation
Scripture
Consequently, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.
Romans 8:1-2
Reflection
"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." Few sentences in the Bible have brought more relief to burdened consciences. Paul has spent the previous chapters laying out the depth of human sin and the frustrating war between what we want to do and what we actually do. Then, into that honest struggle, he drops this thunderclap of grace: no condemnation. None. Now. Each word carries weight. "No" — not reduced, not deferred, but removed entirely. "Now" — not someday, if we improve enough, but in the present tense. The verdict has already been handed down, and for those in Christ it is acquittal. The condemnation we deserved fell on Jesus at the cross, and nothing is left for us to bear. Notice the ground of this freedom: it is "for those who are in Christ Jesus." Our security does not rest on the quality of our performance, which rises and falls, but on our union with Christ, which holds firm. We are not condemned because the law of the Spirit of life has set us free from the law of sin and death. A new power is at work in us, stronger than the old. Many Christians live under a low, constant hum of self-condemnation — never quite sure they are accepted, always bracing for rejection. Paul says, let it go. If you are in Christ, the gavel has already fallen, and the word over your life is not "guilty" but "free."
Prayer
Father, thank you that in Christ there is no condemnation left for me — not reduced, not delayed, but gone. Silence the voice of self-condemnation within me, and help me live today in the freedom you have already won.
Today's Question
Where do you still live under a sense of condemnation that the gospel says has already been removed?
