Create in Me a Clean Heart
Scripture
Create a clean heart for me, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and with a willing spirit sustain me.
Psalm 51:10-12
Reflection
Psalm 51 is the prayer of a man who has hit the bottom. David wrote it after his sin with Bathsheba and the death he engineered to cover it up. He has no excuses left, no image to protect. And out of that wreckage comes one of the most beautiful prayers in the Bible. Notice what David asks for. Not merely to be let off, not simply to feel better, but to be remade: "Create in me a clean heart, O God." The word for "create" is the same word used in Genesis 1 for God making the world out of nothing. David knows he cannot renovate himself. He needs the Creator to do again what only the Creator can do — to make something clean where there was only ruin. This is the deep hope of repentance. It is not just regret, and it is not just damage control. It is turning back to the only One who can make us new from the inside. David does not ask to be given a better self-improvement plan; he asks for a new heart. If you have fallen hard, this psalm is for you. You do not have to clean yourself up before you come. You come as you are, with nothing to offer but honesty, and you ask the God who made the world from nothing to make something new in you. The cross is proof that he will.
Prayer
God my Maker, I cannot cleanse my own heart; only you can create what is clean. Do in me again what you did at the beginning — make something new where there is only ruin. Restore to me the joy of your salvation.
Today's Question
Where do you need God to do more than help you improve — to create something genuinely new in you?
