The Lord Is My Shepherd
Scripture
Yahweh is my shepherd; I will not lack for anything . In grassy pastures he makes me lie down; by quiet waters he leads me. He restores my life. He leads me in correct paths for the sake of his name. Even when I walk in a dark valley, I fear no evil because you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:1-4
Reflection
Perhaps no words in Scripture have comforted more people than these. "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want." David, who had been a shepherd himself, knew exactly what the image meant. Sheep are not clever or strong. They cannot find pasture or water on their own, cannot defend themselves, and panic easily. They survive entirely because someone attentive leads them. David does not pretend this life is free of danger. He speaks of walking through the darkest valley, the valley of the shadow of death. The shepherd does not promise a path that avoids the valley; he promises to be present within it. "I will fear no evil, for you are with me." The comfort is not the absence of danger but the presence of the Shepherd. It is easy to want a God who removes every hard road. But the psalm offers something better and more honest: a God who walks the hard road beside us, whose rod and staff are not for show but for our protection and guidance. Jesus takes this psalm onto his own lips when he calls himself the Good Shepherd — the one who lays down his life for the sheep. The Shepherd who leads you through the valley has already walked through the deepest valley of all, death itself, and come out the other side, so that you can follow him all the way home.
Prayer
Good Shepherd, thank you that I lack nothing I truly need when I am in your care. When I walk through dark valleys, help me to fear no evil, because you are with me. Lead me today, and let me trust your voice.
Today's Question
What "valley" are you walking through, and how might you lean more fully on the Shepherd's presence within it?
