Passover Blood
Scripture
“And I will go through the land of Egypt during this night, and I will strike all of the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from human to animal, and I will do punishments among all of the gods of Egypt. I am Yahweh. And the blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and I will see the blood, and I will pass over you, and there will not be a destructive plague among you when I strike the land of Egypt.
Exodus 12:12-13
Reflection
On the night Israel left Egypt, their safety did not rest on their goodness, their strength, or their status. It rested on blood — a lamb slain, its blood painted on the doorframes. "When I see the blood, I will pass over you," God says. The dividing line between judgement and rescue was not how worthy the household was, but whether they trusted the sign God had given. There is something humbling in this. The Israelites were not spared because they were better than the Egyptians. They were spared because they sheltered under the provision God appointed. Redemption, from the very beginning, is by grace through a substitute. Every Passover afterward, Israel would retell this night, teaching their children that they were a people bought out of slavery at the cost of a lamb. And when Jesus gathered his disciples for a Passover meal on the night before he died, he took the bread and the cup and made himself the meaning of the feast. He is the Lamb whose blood marks us out, so that death passes over and we go free. If you ever wonder whether you are safe with God, the answer does not lie in measuring your own worthiness. It lies in the blood of the Lamb, already shed, already applied to all who shelter beneath it.
Prayer
God our Redeemer, thank you that my safety rests not on my own merit but on the blood of the Lamb. Help me to shelter under what Christ has done, and to live as one who has been bought out of slavery and set free.
