Called to Go

Scripture

And Yahweh said to Abram, “Go out from your land and from your relatives, and from the house of your father, to the land that I will show you. And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great. And you will be a blessing. And I will bless those who bless you, and those who curse you I will curse. And all families of the earth will be blessed in you.”

Genesis 12:1-3

Reflection

God's rescue plan for a broken world begins with one aging, childless man being told to leave everything familiar. "Go," God says to Abram — leave your country, your people, your father's household — to a land I will show you. Notice that last phrase. God does not hand over a map. He asks Abram to start walking and trust that the destination will become clear on the way. Faith almost always begins with a "go" before it receives the full picture. Abram is given a promise — a great nation, a blessing, a name — but no itinerary. He has to move toward God's word before he can see where it leads. Tucked into the call is its purpose: Abram is blessed in order to be a blessing, until all the families of the earth are blessed through him. This is not a private arrangement between God and one man. It is the first move in a plan that reaches all the way to Jesus, Abraham's descendant, through whom the whole world is finally blessed. Your calling may feel similarly vague — a nudge toward something unclear, a conviction without a roadmap. God rarely shows us the whole road at once. He shows us the next step, and he asks us to take it, trusting that we, too, are blessed to be a blessing.

Prayer

Faithful God, you called Abram to go before he could see where he was going. Give me courage to take the step you are showing me today, even when the rest of the path is hidden. Make me a blessing to those around me.

Today's Question

What is the next step of obedience God is asking of you, even without the full picture?
