A Promise in the Dark

hope Foundations CrossShaped Editorial

Scripture

And I will put hostility between you and between the woman, and between your offspring and between her offspring; he will strike you on the head, and you will strike him on the heel.”

Genesis 3:15

Reflection

In the middle of the worst moment in human history — judgement falling, paradise closing — God makes a promise. Even as he addresses the serpent, he speaks of a coming offspring who will crush its head, though his own heel will be struck in the struggle. Christians have long called this the first glimmer of the gospel, the protoevangelium: the earliest hint that God will not abandon the world to its ruin. What strikes us is the timing. God does not wait until things improve to offer hope. He plants the promise in the soil of the curse itself. Before Adam and Eve have taken a single step out of Eden, they carry a word that evil will not have the last word. This is how God often works. Hope is not reserved for the far side of our troubles; it is given in the middle of them. The promise is costly — the victor will be wounded in winning — and that, too, points forward. At the cross, Christ takes the serpent's strike in his own body and breaks its power forever. If you are standing in a dark chapter today, listen for the promise woven into it. God is not waiting for your circumstances to brighten before he speaks hope. He speaks it now, into the dark.

Prayer

God of hope, thank you that you spoke a promise into the darkest moment of our story and have been keeping it ever since. When I cannot see a way forward, help me to trust the word you have already given, fulfilled in Jesus.
