The Ache of the Fall
Scripture
Then they heard the sound of Yahweh God walking in the garden at the windy time of day. And the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God among the trees of the garden. And Yahweh God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” And he replied, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid because I am naked, so I hid myself.”
Genesis 3:8-10
Reflection
Something breaks in Genesis 3, and we have been living with the aftershocks ever since. The first instinct of sin is not defiance but hiding. Adam and Eve hear God walking in the garden — the same presence that had been pure gift — and now they are afraid. They cover themselves. They slip behind the trees. We know this instinct intimately. When we have done wrong, our reflex is to conceal, to manage the image, to avoid the One we have wronged. We assume that exposure means condemnation, so we hide from the very love that could heal us. But look closely at what God does. He comes walking in the garden. He asks, "Where are you?" — not because he has lost them, but because he will not let them stay lost. The question is an invitation to come out of the shadows. The whole rest of Scripture is God pursuing people who are hiding, until he comes all the way down into our hiding place himself, in Christ. You cannot hide well enough to escape God's love, and you do not need to. The ache you feel when you are far from him is not meant to drive you deeper into the trees. It is meant to send you running back toward the voice still calling your name.
Prayer
Lord, I know the instinct to hide — to cover my failures and avoid your gaze. Thank you that you come looking for me anyway. Give me the courage to step out of the shadows and answer when you ask where I am.
Today's Question
What are you currently hiding from God, and what would it look like to step into the open?
