Made in His Image

Scripture

And God said, “Let us make humankind in our image and according to our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of heaven, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every moving thing that moves upon the earth.” So God created humankind in his image, in the likeness of God he created him, male and female he created them.

Genesis 1:26-27

Reflection

Everything else in creation is spoken into being. Only humanity is made in the image of God. In the ancient world, a king would set up an image of himself in a distant province to represent his rule there. Genesis takes that idea and gives it to every human being: you are placed in the world to represent God, to reflect his character into the places he has put you. This changes how we see ourselves and how we see others. Your worth is not earned by productivity, beauty, or success. It is given, stamped into you before you drew a breath. And the stranger, the difficult colleague, the person you find easy to overlook — each carries the same royal image. To diminish them is to deface something God called very good. It also tells us what we are for. We are not here to consume and move on, but to reflect — to bring something of God's justice, creativity, and tenderness into the ordinary spaces we occupy. When Jesus comes, he is called the true image of the invisible God, showing us at last what a fully human, fully faithful image-bearer looks like. We grow into our calling by becoming more like him.

Prayer

Father, thank you that I bear your image, not by my own achievement but by your design. Help me to treat every person I meet today as someone who carries your likeness, and shape me to reflect you more clearly.

Today's Question

Whose dignity as an image-bearer do you find hardest to honour, and why?
